Taking Care Of  Your Cast Iron Pans      

So, you are the proud owner of a cast iron pan, so you are probably excited to use it. Well before you do let’s go over some cast iron care Seasoning, or curing, a cast iron pan is essential to its care. First thing you’ll want to do is season your cast iron.

The process of seasoning couldn’t be easier. All you need is the pan (along with its lid if there is one) and vegetable oil, shortening or bacon fat (my personal favorite). After an hour in the oven, the pan will be non-stick and easy to clean and it only gets better the more you use it.

Coat your cast iron cookware inside and out with vegetable oil, shortening or bacon fat.
• Place in a 300 F oven for one hour.
• Remove and wipe off any liquefied shortening.
• You will need to repeat the procedure several times to darken the color of the cast iron to black, but it’s ready to use after this first seasoning.  Once seasoned, never use harsh detergents to clean it or put it in the dishwasher. Rub with a thin coating of vegetable oil. Store in a cool, dry place with a folded paper towel between the lid and the cookware to allow the air to circulate and prevent rust
• Your pan is now seasoned!

Cast iron skillets get better with age- if you’re consistently cooking with them, and if you don’t clean them with soap. Cast iron pans have been handed down for generations, hailed as the greatest cookware ever made. For most cleanings, a simple wipe out with a paper towel will suffice. This leaves the extra oil to soak into the iron and avoids the removal of oils that hot water and soap would cause. If you wash with water, dry the pan immediately with a towel and set on the stove or an oven rack until completely dry.

Then, put a few drops of oil in the pan, and use a paper towel to coat the entire surface till the pan’s sheen is restored. Remember to always be in your local thrift shops looking for cast iron pans you won’t be paying an arm and a leg for them. They’ll just need a little restoring is all just follow the steps and you’ll have a beautiful restored cast iron pan in no time
