The Meaning Behind Food Saying’s

Bottoms up!

– everybody should drink now (this expression is used at the end of a drinking toast)

“Bottoms up,” our host said at the beginning of the dinner.

Bottom-up is inextricably linked with its converse – top-down. Both are from the mid-20th century and it’s appropriate that the first citation of bottom-up also includes top-down: That’s from the 1942 edition of Harvard University’s Quarterly Journal of Economics:

#1 When a beverage is being finished, the bottom of the glass/bottle/cup/etc. faces towards the ceiling (up).

#2 Bottoms up, (used interjectionally to urge the downing of one’s drink).
